This chapter provides an overview of a complex and variegated class of material, namely gels. The objective of this chapter is to introduce the reader to a basic knowledge of gels and principally to the difference between physical and chemical gels. Structural and mechanical properties are introduced in order to provide the basis for a sufficient comprehension of the uses and applications of this class of materials in the conservation of Cultural Heritage. Finally, standard as well as advanced characterization techniques are reported.
