This chapter summaries the utilisation of ionic liquids in the synthesis of materials via ionothermal methods. These methods have been used extensively to form a wide range of materials from porous to dense and nano materials. By controlling the ionic liquid functionality, the material's structure can be modified systematically thus providing an alternative route to many materials which can be formed using molecular solvent processes, as well as the formation of new materials
