The combination of ionic liquids and heterogeneous catalysis is becoming increasingly used and a significant number of examples have demonstrated synergy between the phases leading to increased rates or selectivity or both. These examples have included, importantly, catalysed asymmetric reactions. The solubility of the reactants and heat of reaction are among the parameters that were exploited to achieve high selectivities in these reactions. The advantages of performing reactions using this combination (heterogeneous catalysis and ionic liquids) has clearly been demonstrated. Based on these studies, this chapter provides a critical analysis of several classes of reactions including hydrogenations, dehydrogenations, oxidations, carbon–carbon bond formation and valorisation of biomass.
