This chapter affords a concise introduction to the rapidly developing field of healable polymeric materials and has been written with the synthetic polymer chemist in mind, with the specific aim of bridging the technical ‘language’ barriers between chemistry and materials science.
Definitions of the different categories of healable materials are outlined before an overview is provided. This overview is aimed at the practicing chemist and concerns the techniques currently employed to study the healablity of these fascinating new materials. The key techniques required to study healable polymeric materials—including impact testing and rheometry—are described.
