Nowadays, an increasing number of countries realise the need for a circular economy; similar concepts, such as “sustainable society” and “recyclable society”, have been proposed, together with a series of practices such as those embodied in the terms “Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe”, “Biomass Refinery Industrial Complex” (Japan) and “EcoAgrobusiness Park” (New Jersey, USA). Resource‐ and energy‐recovery from waste plays an essential role in the context of a circular economy. In this chapter, the relationship of waste to the circular economy is discussed on the basis of recent successful practices. The technical and economic viability of waste as a resource is described.
