The present chapter deals with the synthesis of conjugated polymers featuring various fused heterocyclic units. The structure of the heterocyclic moiety and the way it is incorporated into the conjugated backbone of the polymer affect the electronic properties of the final material and define the synthetic strategy that can be used for the synthesis. Among the polymerization methods described in the chapter are the various condensation procedures, oxidative polymerization approaches and transition metal catalyzed C–C coupling techniques.
