There is currently considerable interest in the whole field of microencapsulation for the development of new and enhanced materials and products across a wide range of technology sectors. Within this broader interest, the application of so-called ‘colloidosome’ technology for the production of capsules has attracted a great deal of academic research. In this short review, we present the current state of knowledge for colloidosome microcapsule technology covering both their synthesis and manufacture. The challenges associated with using colloidosomes to encapsulate active ingredients are also reviewed and the likely applications of these materials as capsules are then discussed.
