This chapter documents how the challenge of achieving monoarylation selectivity in palladium-catalyzed Buchwald–Hartwig amination and ketone α-arylation chemistry has been addressed in recent years through the design and/or implementation of sterically demanding phosphine ancillary ligands. Particular attention is given to documenting advances leading to the first reports of the selective monoarylation of ammonia, hydrazine and acetone as representative challenging reaction partners, given the broad synthetic potential of these novel transformations in chemical synthesis.
