This book chapter is a comprehensive critical review of the crystal structures based on the N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid (H4pmida) molecule. It identifies and highlights the similarities and differences between most of these structures, and proposes conceptual crystal engineering tools aiming at assisting in the design of novel multidimensional coordination polymers based on the H4pmida residues. The chapter ends with two examples of modular bottom-up construction of metal–organic frameworks based on H4pmida.
