In spite of their huge promise, hydrogels have not yet come through the storm as, currently, most publications on hydrogels focus only on the potential biological applications in surgery and drug delivery. They have rarely been considered alongside polymers and composites as performance materials and substantial challenges remain in this field to try to address this issue.
