In this chapter, firstly, we introduce the basic characterizations by which to judge a new material as photocatalyst; these characterizations could prove the chemical reaction over the material is a photoactivated, semiconductor-characteristic-related, catalytic process. Then, the new photocatalysts are classified into five categories to be introduced in detail; more than 130 new and representative materials are summarized herein. Furthermore, the photodegradation mechanisms are discussed. Two photodegradation routes of the organic dye are mentioned and the characterizations used to distinguish these two routes are introduced. Furthermore, we also discuss the detection of reactive species in the photodegradation of organic contaminants. Finally, the perspective trend of development in new materials for degradation of organics and related characterizations is briefly discussed.
