Arene ruthenium(ii) complexes as potential inhibitors in chemotherapy have been reviewed. It is revealed that arene ruthenium(ii) complexes coordinated with varied ligands exhibit promising inhibitory activity against the proliferation, migration and invasion. It is also shown that this kind of complexes exert their antitumor activity through inducing apoptosis, cell cycle arrest and/or DNA damage of tumor cells.
