This chapter covers selected papers published in 2013 on chemical synthesis and medicinal application of modified nucleotides and oligonucleotides. Nucleotides are the building blocks of nucleic acids and play fundamental roles in biological processes. Novel synthetic methods for modified nucleotides are continuously developed and their biological potentials extensively explored. As in the previous year the chemical synthesis and medicinal exploration of modified nucleoside monophosphates and triphosphates are divided into sections relating to the nucleobase and sugar. This chapter also reviews research developments on various forms of modified nucleotides, including phosphoramidites, phosphoramidates and phosphonates, triphosphates and oligomers.
