This chapter reviews the literature published in 2013 relating to modified oligonucleotides. The literature continues the trend of previous years in that modified oligonucleotides continue to play a key role in many biochemical and structural studies. A broad range of modifications to the internucleotide linkage, the sugar and the nucleobase are included in this review for many different biochemical applications, as are nucleic acid nanostructures and devices. Nucleic acid structures, including single-molecule studies, are one of the most studied areas, and the systems described becoming more complex as novel techniques emerge.
