Piotr Bałczewski studied chemistry at the Technical University of Łodź. MSc/PhD theses (P/S/Si and cyclopentanoid chemistry) were with Prof. M. Mikołajczyk at the Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies (CM&MS), Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS), Łódź. Doctoral studies at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, PAS, Warsaw then a postdoctoral period at Manchester University (UK) in alkaloid chemistry (Prof. J. A. Joule) led to habilitation and appointment as full professor at CM&MS PAS, Łódź and the Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa. He currently leads materials research groups at both institutions. He was honored as ChemPubSoc Europe Fellow (2018, Liverpool).

Dr Anna S. Balueva graduated from Kazan State University in 1984. Since that time, she occupied research positions in A.E. Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry KSC RAS (IOPC), Kazan. Since 2000 she has been a senior researcher of the laboratory of organophosphorus ligands of IOPC. She received a PhD degree in 1988 under the supervision of DrSci. O. A. Erastov. Her research interests includes the synthetic and coordination chemistry of functionalized tertiary phosphines (in particular P,N-containing hetero- and macrocycles).

Goutam Brahmachari, after receiving his PhD in 1997 at Visva-Bharati University (India) joined his alma mater the very next year and currently holds the position of a full professor of chemistry since 2011. Research interests of his group include green chemistry, organic synthesis, and medicinal chemistry of natural and natural product-inspired synthetic molecules. With more than 21 years of experience in both teaching and research, he has produced more than 200 scientific publications including original research papers, review articles, books and invited book chapters in the field of natural products and green chemistry. He has already authored/edited 25 books and more than 40 book chapters so far published by internationally reputed major presses. He is the Series Editor of the Elsevier Book Series ‘Natural Product Drug Discovery’. Prof. Brahmachari is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Who's Who in the World Listee, and also a recipient of Academic Brilliance Award 2015 (Excellence in Research), Dr Kalam Best Teaching Faculty Award-2017 and INSA (Indian National Science Academy) Teachers Award-2019.

Mário J. F. Calvete is currently Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra. He obtained his PhD in Natural Sciences-Organic Chemistry in 2004, from the Eberhard-Karls University of Tübingen-Germany, supervised by Michael Hanack, on the synthesis of phthalocyanine derivatives for Nonlinear Optics. After a postdoctoral stay at Tübingen (2004–2006), he returned to Portugal as post-doc researcher at the University of Aveiro, working on the synthesis of porphyrin−phthalocyanine dyads and then at the University of Coimbra (2007–2010). In 2010 he was appointed Auxiliary Researcher at the University of Coimbra, a position he held until 2019. His current research interests are in tetrapyrrolic macrocycle and other heterocyclics design and their use in homogeneous/heterogeneous catalysis, theranostics and light-driven applications. He is author of ca. 85 peer-reviewed papers, 2 books and 13 book chapters.

Rui M. B. Carrilho is an Auxiliary Researcher at University of Coimbra. He obtained his PhD diploma in Chemistry in 2014 from University of Coimbra, supervised by M. M. Pereira and L. Kollár, focused on the development of tervalent phosphorus ligands and metal complexes for application in catalysis. During 2014, he worked as a post-doc researcher in the pharmaceutical spin-off Luzitin SA, on the synthesis of new photosensitizers for application in photodynamic therapy and diagnosis. Since 2015, he has worked on the development of catalytic processes for CO2 activation. He is author of ca. 25 peer-reviewed papers and 8 book chapters.

Amit Chakraborty obtained his BSc degree from the Suri Vidyasagar College, Burdwan University, West Bengal, India, in 2007 and MSc degree in 2009 in inorganic chemistry from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Kanpur, India. He completed his PhD at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Kanpur, India, under the supervision of Prof. V. Chandrasekhar in 2015. He briefly worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, India. Currently he is a National Post-doctoral Fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Hyderabad. His research interests include molecular magnetism, transition metal/lanthanide complexes, and design of unusual ligands and in new molecular materials.

Vadapalli Chandrasekhar obtained his PhD degree in 1982 from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and postdoctoral work at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA. After briefly working at the Research and Development section of the Indian Petrochemicals Corporation at Vadodara, as a Senior Research Officer, he joined the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1987 where he has been a full professor since 1995. He served as the Head of the Department of Chemistry, IIT Kanpur (2008–2010), and as the Dean of Faculty Affairs, IIT Kanpur (2011–2012). He also worked at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Hyderabad, as a Senior Professor/Dean (2012–2014) and Director (2014–2017), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, India. Currently he is a Distinguished Professor and the Centre Director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Hyderabad. His research interests are in the area of molecular materials, inorganic rings and polymers, main-group organometallics, and polynuclear metal assemblies. He has been a recipient of the S. S. Bhatnagar Award of the Council and Scientific Industrial Research, India, and the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. He is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, the Indian National Science Academy, and the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World, Trieste, Italy. His research work is documented in 370+ publications.

Giulia Fiorani completed her PhD in Chemical Sciences at the Università degli Studi di Roma “Tor Vergata” in 2010, working on synthesis and applications of Ionic Liquids. From 2014 to 2016, Giulia was awarded a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship and joined the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ). Then, she covered a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant position at the University of Oxford. From Dec. 2017, she is assistant Professor (ricercatore) at Ca’ Foscari University Venice. Giulia has been the recipient of the “Organic Chemistry for Environment, Energy and Nanosciences” junior prize given by the Organic Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI). Prof. Andrey A. Karasik graduated from Kazan State University in 1986. He has held various positions in A.E. Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry KSC RAS (IOPC), Kazan for more than 30 years. From 2008 he was a vice-director of IOPC; and since November 2017 he is an acting head of IOPC as a separate structural subdivision of Federal Research Center “KSC RAS”. He received PhD and DrSci degrees in 1988 and 2003, respectively. His research interests include the synthetic and physical chemistry of functionalized tertiary phosphines (in particular P,N-containing hetero- and macrocycles) and their metal complexes.

György Keglevich graduated from the Technical University of Budapest in 1981 as a chemical engineer. He was awarded the “Doctor of Chemical Science” degree in 1994, in the subject of organophosphorus chemistry. He has been the Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry and Technology since 1999. He is a P-heterocyclic chemist. He also deals with environmentally friendly chemistry: MW chemistry, phase transfer catalysis and the development of new catalysts. He is the author or co-author of ca. 500 papers (the majority of which appeared in international journals). He is the member of the Editorial Board of Molecules and Phosphorus, Sulfur and Silicon, and the Related Elements and Current Microwave Chemistry. He is Associate Editor for Heteroatom Chemistry, Letters in Drug Design and Discovery, Current Organic Synthesis and Letters in Organic Chemistry, co-Editor-in-Chief for Current Catalysis, and Editor-in-Chief for Current Organic Chemistry and Current Green Chemistry. He is the member of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Phosphorus Chemistry, and arranged ICPC 22 in Budapest, Hungary in 2018.

Dr Elvira I. Musina graduated from Kazan State University in 1994. From 1994 to 2003 she occupied research positions in A.E. Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry KSC RAS (IOPC), Kazan. From 2003 to 2008 she was a leading engineer of the Central Laboratory of OJSC “Kazanorgsintez”, Kazan. Since 2009 she has been a senior researcher of the laboratory of organophosphorus ligands of IOPC. She received a PhD degree in 1997 under the supervision of DrSci. G. N. Nikonov. Her research interests include the synthetic and coordination chemistry of functionalized tertiary phosphines (in particular P,N-containing hetero- and macrocycles).

Romana Pajkert received her PhD in organic chemistry in 2008 from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (Poland) under the supervision of Professor Henryk Koroniak. She then carried out postdoctoral studies at the University in Bremen (Germany) in Professor Gerd-Volker Röschenthaler's group. Starting from 2009, she continued postdoctoral research at the Jacobs University in Bremen. Her major current research interests are focused on fluorine chemistry, organometallic chemistry, synthesis of biologically active compounds, preparation of OLED emitters as well as hypervalent phosphorus derivatives.

Mariette M. Pereira is currently a Full Professor in Organic Chemistry at University of Coimbra (Portugal). She obtained her PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1992 at University of Coimbra and worked as Fellow Assistant at the Universities of Liverpool in 1993 and Autónoma de Barcelona in 1998. She was Director of the Chemistry Research Laboratory of pharmaceutical spin-off Luzitin SA, until 2015. Her research interests are focused on the synthesis of chiral ligands and catalysts development for asymmetric carbonylation tandem reactions and on the development of tetrapyrrolic macrocycle-based photosensitizers for biomedical applications. She has published ca. 155 peer-reviewed papers, 18 books/book chapters and she is the inventor of 6 patents.

Alvise Perosa earned his PhD in chemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 1996 and is currently associate professor of Organic Chemistry at Ca’ Foscari University Venice. He was Fulbright Fellow at Case Western Reserve University, Endeavour Research Fellow at the University of Sydney and is currently a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Alvise sits on the Editorial Advisory Boards of the journals Green Chemistry (RSC) and ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering (ACS). Alvise's interests include research, teaching and outreach in green chemistry with specific focus on chemicals from renewable resources, green chemicals from carbon dioxide, ionic liquids, catalysis, supercritical fluids and multiphase reaction systems. Sara M. A. Pinto is an Auxiliary Researcher at the University of Coimbra. She obtained her PhD degree in Chemistry in 2012 at the University of Coimbra. She was a post-doc researcher at the Coimbra Chemistry Center of the University of Coimbra from 2012 until the end of 2018, when she was appointed as Auxiliary Researcher, since January 2019. She is author of 26 papers in international multidisciplinary chemistry peer-reviewed journals, 1 patent application, 1 book chapter and is an author of more than 30 communications. She is also the author and co-author of several oral and poster communications presented in international/national meetings. Her current research interests involve the use of N-ligands as synthons for the development of monomodal/multimodal contrast agents for medical imaging and also the development of photosensitizers for application in PDI (photo-inactivation) of bacteria.

Prof. Gerd-Volker Röschenthaler received his Dr rer. nat. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of the Saarland, Saarbrücken (Germany) in 1971. In 1972 he moved to the Technical University of Braunschweig (Germany) to work with Professor Reinhard Schmutzler where he got his his “Habilitation” (Dr rer. nat. habil.) in 1982. During this time he spent several months as a visiting scientist with Professor Alan MacDiarmid, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (USA). In 1978 he became Professor at the University of Bremen (Germany) and in 2009 Professor of Chemistry at Jacobs University Bremen. He served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City (USA), the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion), Haifa (Israel). His main research interests are focused on organofluorine and organophosphorus chemistry. In 2012 he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the Technion, where he is serving as a member of the Board of Governors. Since 2016 he has been Concurrent Professor at the University of Nanjing, Nanjing (China). He chaired the 18th Int. Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry 2006 in Bremen and the Bremen Fluorine Days 2016.

Dr Aliia V. Shamsieva graduated from Kazan Federal University in 2013. Since that time, she has occupied the position of junior research fellow in the laboratory of organophosphorus ligands at the A.E. Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry FRC KSC RAS (IOPC). She received a PhD degree in 2016 under the supervision of Dr E. I. Musina. Her research interests include the synthetic and coordination chemistry of functionalized tertiary phosphines (in particular pyridyl-functionalized cyclic phosphines) and their oxides.

Maurizio Selva is a Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Molecular Sciences and Nanosystems, University Ca’ Foscari Venezia (Italy). Since the beginning of his academic career in the early 1990s, his main research interests focused on the implementation of eco-friendly organic syntheses based on clean reagents, catalysts and solvents. More specifically, the development of green catalytic techniques for the upgrading of platform chemicals derived from bio-wastes, using dense CO2 and dialkyl carbonates and multiphase systems assisted by ionic liquids, are among the current topics of research of Prof. Selva. Joanna Wilk graduated from the Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (2008). She received her PhD at the Center of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences (CMMS, PAS) (2015). Since 2008, she has been a member of the scientifc staff in the group of Prof. Piotr Bałczewski at the Department of Heteroorganic Chemistry, CMMS, PAS. She is a co-author of several patents, original and review articles, and book chapters (Organophosphorus Chemistry, RSC, vol. 40–42, 44, 46 and 48). She has actively been involved in the realization of Polish and European research projects.
