(Hetero)aryl azoswitches are essential components in light-responsive surfaces, self-healing materials, and smart drugs. This chapter should serve as a general introduction to the (photo)chemistry of (hetero)aryl azoswitches and provide an overview of the many possibilities they can offer in terms of applications. We aim to summarize the developments and trends in the field of the last years in an easily digestible way, still covering a substantial majority of the literature devoted to the topic. Hence, prominent and characteristic examples are highlighted and discussed.
