This chapter covers the photochemistry of oxygen containing groups reported in the 2018 to the mid-2020 period. It is mostly organized according to reaction types (Norrish type I, photo-Fries, etc.), but some sections focus on the particular functionality of several groups, such as photocaging, or the ability to carry out several chemical reactions in a single reaction vessel (photochemical reaction orthogonality). Applications of the photoreactions to the synthesis of relevant products, as well as to technology, are included. Mechanistic information available via steady-state and time-resolved studies, as well as the information derived from theoretical calculations, are briefly commented on. Consistent with the target of chapters from previous years, only photoreactions where oxygen-containing compounds are light-absorbing species, are addressed.
