The chapter “Dyes and Pigments” within this second edition of “Conservation Science: Heritage Materials” has the ambition to reset the fundamental differences as well as the similarities between pigments and dyes. Their classifications and their different ways of application on works of art are considered. The most appropriate analytical techniques for each of these materials is discussed, as well as the stability of pigments and dyes and, as examples, some concrete conservation and preservation studies. The second part of this chapter is dedicated to the study of the colouring material (pigments and dyes) used by Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret) in a major example of his architectural and furniture creation in France. The scientific results are considered in the context of the conservation and restoration understanding of these polychromatic works.
