Despite the successful introduction of treatments for many neuropsychiatric disorders, there remains an important unmet medical need. Successes to date generally represent a few well-established mechanisms of action, and newer drugs are largely incremental improvements. Many have efficacy and/or tolerability issues, and there is an opportunity to differentiate new treatments that are more effective or better tolerated. Here we describe the current challenges to finding new therapies and how evolving new research approaches along with better ways of working are showing promise for the neuroscience field.
