This chapter presents the physiological/pharmacological properties and therapeutic uses of drugs acting on the gut and stomach. The basic principles of pharmacology and development from physiology, medicinal chemistry to an increasing, sometimes vague understanding of the pathophysiology and the disease state are highlighted. The drugs used to treat GI diseases are summarized, and current gaps in research and treatments are identified.
