This chapter covers recent developments of binary halogen–chalcogen systems, including neutral compounds as well as halo‐chalcogenate anions and cations. Most of the binary chalcogen halides are well known and commonly used as standard chemical reagents. The preparation and structural features of most of these systems is therefore be presented briefly, whereas recent applications in molecular and materials synthesis are discussed with substantial details, so as to highlight the broader implications of the relatively well‐established compounds (e.g. SF4, S2Cl2, Se2Cl2) in the area of modern materials synthesis.
