Due to the high stability of bonds between oxygen and sulfur, selenium, and tellurium, respectively, a huge number of compounds are known. In line with the intention of the Handbook of Chalcogen Chemistry, i.e. to illustrate new perspectives, a selection has to be made and predominantly newer results are discussed in more detail, while older and well‐documented items are only mentioned occasionally. Especially in the field of chalcogenate chemistry of p‐ and f‐block elements, as well as the field of polysulfate chemistry, impressive new discoveries have been made in recent years, which are more intensively discussed. Furthermore, the chapter gives at least references for those compounds that have been characterized with high accuracy, mainly by diffraction methods.
