Topical therapy is one of the foundations of a dermatologist's therapeutic tools as it is used for symptomatic relief, control, or cure of the underlying disease. The vehicles used to deliver topical therapy can considerably influence drug performance. The vehicle can have direct effects on disease; it can affect the delivery of the active agent, its physical appearance and contribute to sensory properties which affect compliance. While semi-solid compositions such as creams, lotions, gels and ointments are commonly used by consumers, new forms are desirable in order to achieve better control of the application, improve skin absorption and maintain or bestow the beneficial properties of such topical products.
