Coupling electrically-produced non-thermal plasmas (NTPs) with NOx storage-reduction (NSR) catalysts provides a promising approach for improving catalyst NOx removal efficiency, particularly at low operating temperatures. Under lean conditions, plasma can be applied to facilitate NO oxidation to NO2, thereby improving NOx storage efficiency. The use of plasma during rich NSR catalyst purging increases the extent of NOx release and reduction, enabling catalyst regeneration at temperatures as low as ambient. In this chapter the literature concerning NTP-assisted NSR catalyst operation is reviewed and the underpinning mechanisms considered. The advantages and disadvantages of this concept are highlighted and the prospects for commercial application of the technology are discussed.
