This monograph has been reviewed by members of the IUMS–ICFMH Working Party on Culture Media and given ‘Proposed’ status.

Originally developed by Lovett et al. (1987) from the formulae of Ralovich et al. (1971, 1972), this medium has been further modified (Hitchins, 1995) to increase its buffering capacity. Reduction of the acriflavine hydrochloride content has standardised the medium in respect of non-dairy and dairy foods. Addition of sodium pyruvate and the delayed addition of the selective agents assists in the recovery of injured cells.

Add the ingredients, except those marked *, to the water, distribute in 225 mL amounts and autoclave at 121°C for 15 min. Before use, aseptically add 2.5 mL of a 10% (w/v) filter sterilised solution of sodium pyruvate.
