Prehydrolysis coupled with traditional pulping methods is a forest biorefinery approach to add valuable fermentation-based coproducts to existing pulp and paper production. This chapter will review research on pulping procedures to release the hemicellulose extract from commercially important wood species; extract hydrolysis, inhibitor removal, concentration; ethanol fermentation of the resulting hydrolysate sugars; engineering process modeling and economic modeling.
