The scope of this chapter is regulatory applications of XRF, with specific focus on rapid screening methods to identify toxic elements in supplements and cosmetics and accurate quantitative methods for the determination of toxic and nutrient elements in various consumer products. It includes information on different types of handheld and portable XRF analyzers, considerations for the safe use of these radiation-emitting devices, and recommendations to minimize potential exposure to products containing toxic substances. A major focus is on describing best practices on the use of XRF in regulatory settings, and providing numerous examples of the use of XRF for both screening and quantitative analysis applications within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
