This chapter reviews the major classes of topical formulations currently available for delivery of actives locally to the skin. An overview of the physiology of the outermost layers of the skin is presented. The principles of drug penetration through the stratum corneum from topical formulations are outlined. Rational selection of candidates for topical delivery is explained. Dermal products are classified based on formulation type and examples of marketed preparations are provided. Finally, research and development in the field and likely future impact are briefly considered.
