The University of Western Ontario, located in the town of London, on the river Thames (fur hunters seemed to prefer names that recalled them of the far away Fatherland in the cold Canada planes), celebrated its official centenary in 1978, although the actual instruction did not begin until 1881 and the institution primarily addressed the preparation of the clergy (Fig. 1). Apropos geography it should be noticed that the largest part of the Ontario Province lies east of the town of London, while the name of the UWO is correct when referred to the 50 km strip of land where all of the economic life of Canada takes place. The first course in chemistry was given by J. Bowsman, who was appointed as Professor of Practical Chemistry for medical students. In 1923, John A. Gunton was appointed Head of Department of Chemistry and the first B.Sc. in Chemistry was granted.
