Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction, which can convert renewable solar energy into high value-added fuels, offers a promising approach to alleviate global energy and environmental problems. In this chapter, the fundamentals of the photocatalytic CO2 reduction mechanism are fully elaborated from the perspective of CO2 reduction reaction pathways and photocatalyst design. The main influencing factors of photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity and selectivity are analysed. An overview of recent advances for high-efficiency photocatalyst design is given from the aspects of light adsorption ability, photogenerated charge carrier separation and surface-active site properties. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives of photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions are presented.
