Chapter 16: Firearms Check Access

An overview of the basics of forensic firearms examination and firearms chemistry is presented. Firearms and ammunition nomenclature, design and manufacture are detailed in relation to the work of the firearms forensic scientist whose work at the scene, post-mortem examination and in the laboratory is explained. Updated UK firearms legislation together with advances in laboratory and firearms manufacturing technology are also referenced. Particular attention is paid to the study of gunshot residue (GSR), its analysis, composition, persistence and its evidential value are discussed.
