I express my gratitude to colleagues, friends and family who encouraged me to create the second volume of Drug Discovery for Schizophrenia. Special recognition goes to Dr Amy Ramsey and Professor Ali Salahpour, who supported my exploration of the communication pathways between the peripheral and central nervous systems (from PNS to CNS) on mouse models of mental disorders. I’m deeply appreciative to all contributors who generously dedicated their time in writing their chapters.
This book emerged from the collective desire of contributors to delve deeper into the mechanisms underlying schizophrenia and to envision novel strategies for its study. It is essential to discuss mechanisms based on the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which are often overlooked. I firmly believe that systematically accumulating knowledge about PNS–CNS pathological mechanisms will enhance psychiatric neuroscience, providing fresh perspectives for drug discovery. Drawing from expert opinions in academia and clinical studies, this volume covers current progress in genetics/pharmacogenetics, molecular and cellular neuroscience, neurobiology, pharmacology and animal models.
My hope is that our scientific attempts will ultimately lead to more effective early-life diagnostics, prevention strategies, and treatments for this intricate brain disorder. Consistent updates on schizophrenia’s progress will undoubtedly benefit psychiatric neuroscience, helping us unlock the complexities of the human brain and deal with this mental disorder.
