This chapter surveys some of the recent developments in the chemistry and applications of metal hydrides and halides. Hydrides are shown to have diverse roles within the idea of a hydrogen economy including in hydrogen storage, purification and compression, while perovskite-structured halides are at the forefront of solar energy research and development. Broader energy storage roles of both halide and hydride materials are considered in the context of their use in battery electrodes and electrolytes. Wider applications of hydrides as catalysts and superconductors are also discussed.
