Polypeptides carrying carbohydrate side chains, referred to as glycopolypeptides, are designed for use in advanced biomedical and life science applications. However, the synthesis of well-defined glycopolypeptide materials has been a great challenge until recently. Here, the state-of-the-art in the production of glycopolypeptides by ring-opening polymerization of amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs) is described, including the synthesis of NCA monomers, controlled polymerization protocols and post-polymerization (click) glycosylation reactions.
