As with any valuable innovations, pharmaceutical formulations are deserving of intellectual property protection. Intellectual property rights are capable of providing a monopoly in the marketplace for a number of different aspects of such products. Foremost of these is the protection for the invention behind the formulation. This is the domain of patent law. In this chapter, the patent protection for pharmaceutical formulations will be examined with reference to some real-life examples. This chapter concludes with a brief overview of other intellectual property rights.
