This brief paper reviews that it is essential that chlorine, and other disinfectants, be used carefully and that has been the purpose of regulation to date. However, the certainty is that it remains an important weapon in the fight against pathogens in drinking water. It is also important that confidence in the possible risks from by-products should not be overstated and uncertainty needs to be fully acknowledged.
