The application of metrics is required to evaluate the green credentials of research. Metrics from the pharmaceutical and other industries and the literature have been critically assessed and compared to identify methods for measuring sustainability and indicators for relevant environmental issues related to the synthesis of APIs. Some simple recommendations have also been made for bench chemists as to where improvements can be made to improve the sustainability of a reaction.
