This chapter provides a general overview on the structural variety of rare earth metal complexes supported by N-heterocyclic carbenes. The synthetic procedures and strategies are discussed in some detail. The general trends with respect to structures and bonding situations are elucidated, based on experimental and theoretical studies. This chapter also covers tentative reactivity studies and possible catalytic applications of these metal complexes.
