High content imaging has rapidly evolved over the last decade and is now playing a larger role in drug discovery campaigns across both academia and industry. While high content screens continue to increase in scale and complexity, the availability of open source and commercial image analysis and visualization tools have made the technology extremely accessible. Best practices within the field continue to undergo refinement, and here we address currently available imaging hardware and software, as well as approaches to image acquisition, analysis, quality control, and mining of multi-feature datasets.
