An overview of the basics of forensic firearms examination and firearms chemistry is presented. Firearms and ammunition nomenclature, design and manufacture are detailed in relation to the work of the firearms forensic scientist whose work at the scene, post-mortem examination and in the laboratory is explained. Particular attention is paid to the study of gunshot residue, and its analysis, composition, persistence and evidential value are discussed.
