This chapter on marks and impressions discusses the principles that apply to all marks examinations but concentrates on the main areas encountered in forensic casework, namely footwear marks, tool marks and manufacturing marks in plastic film. It provides a structured approach to the fundamental processes of marks examination including search and recovery, analysis, comparison, evaluation and verification. The use of footwear for intelligence is also included, as is a brief discussion of physical fits.
