Our star appearing above the horizon every morning, and descending again at dusk has been used to mark the daily cycles of humanity for millennia. And the colour of the sky at the beginning and end of the day can be as varied as the contents of the day itself. When the hues of a setting Sun are particularly spectacular, we may stop and wonder at the light show. But why can a sunset be so varied and colourful, when the Sun itself is largely unchanging?
