Singlet-oxygen research has been boosted by the ability to detect this reactive oxygen species directly through its specific phosphorescence at 1275 nm. The theoretical and practical aspects of the phosphorescence detection techniques are discussed, and the factors that determine the shape and intensity of the phosphorescence signals are identified and analyzed. A large number of examples of situations encountered in the laboratory are shown and the methods used to gain information on 1O2 properties from phosphorescence data are presented and discussed.
