Inorganic two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have emerged as a new group of catalysts for many electrochemical processes. This chapter introduces some fundamentals of electrocatalysis and the factors in determining electrochemical reaction kinetics. The use of 2D nanomaterials for electrocatalysis is rationalized by discussing their major characteristics and features and the relationships with the property. Recent research progress in developing 2D electrocatalysts for several important reactions, including oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction are summarized. The challenges and prospects for the future are also provided.
