For decades, the development of industrial biocatalysts has been driven by the discovery of new genetic tools. As enzyme or whole-cell biocatalysts continue to be used in ever broader industrial applications, new paradigms beyond genetic engineering have been sought to help enhance biocatalyst stability, flexibility, cost and performance. This chapter introduces the MicroNiche Engineering™ platform, developed exclusively by Microvi Biotech. Using materials science, the MicroNiche Engineering platform designs favourable microenvironments for whole-cell biocatalyst in the form of composites. The MicroNiche Engineering platform introduces a new paradigm for developing “fit-for-process” industrial biocatalysts, and expands the use of biocatalysis within such industries as water purification, wastewater treatment, and the production of biobased chemicals. This chapter provides an overview of MicroNiche Engineering as well as case studies detailing the use of MicroNiche biocatalysts across several commercial applications.
