This chapter focuses on the recent catalytic examples of the use of zirconium for sustainable chemical applications. Zirconium is mostly utilised as a Lewis-acid catalyst. It is not as prevalent as titanium(iv) in catalysis but does offer advantages in terms of catalytic activity and selectivity. The chapter will deal with polymerisation (ring-opening polymerisation of cyclic esters and carbon dioxide/epoxides), activation of carbon dioxide and the utility of ZrO2 in heterogeneous catalysis.
