Low-cost carbon materials were previously considered as catalyst supports because of their tailored porous structure, their surface chemistry and their resistance to acids, bases and high temperatures. They have recently attracted more attention as metal-free carbonaceous heterogeneous catalysts for improved economic returns. They were shown to be promising candidates for liquid phase reactions. This chapter will focus on highlighting the principle use of carbon and functionalized-carbon as metal-free materials for liquid phase reactions.
