The chapter describes current methods for automating the chemical synthesis of bioactive small molecules. In particular, the use of the enabling technologies of machine vision, process analytical methods and immobilized systems is highlighted in the context of specific exemplar syntheses. Flow chemistry and advanced automation are likely to find widespread future application in the assembly and discovery of functional small molecules.
