The chapter provides a brief history of European Union (EU)-funded research in the field of food integrity, quality, safety and authenticity since 1990. The progress through different Framework Programmes and financed research projects is explained, alongside legislative changes, major food incidents and technological developments that have shaped research activity. The 2011 conference “What's for lunch?” summarised the results of the first 10 years of research in Europe and set the future direction of food integrity as we know it today.
