On 15 January 2013 the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, FSAI, published a press release1 on a small survey identifying horse and pig DNA in burger products. The press release initiated a meat substitution scandal that involved most of Europe, maintained high and lengthy media and political salience and, incidentally, led to the production of this book.
This case study describes two aspects of the aftermath of the 2013 horse meat scandal: (1) technical appeals to the UK Government Chemist on official testing results and (2) court action on food fraud uncovered in the horse meat investigation.
